The rescuers who dedicated themselves to finding a home for a neglected dog were profoundly moved by his adopted smile. Petey, a dog who had been overlooked by potential adopters and transferred from a high intake shelter in North Carolina to SPCA Wake in early October, received an adoption update from the SPCA of Wake County.
The small shelter had exceeded its capacity and extended Petey’s stay longer than usual. With no potential adopters in sight, they reached out to the SPCA of Wake County for help, offering Petey more time to find his forever family. Instantly agreeing to take Petey in, the SPCA aimed to alleviate the devastating situation. Remarkably, Petey appeared unfazed and even thrilled by the prospect of meeting new friends. Samantha Ranlet, the SPCA of Wake County spokesperson, shared her observation: “As soon as he arrived here, he eagerly tugged at the leash, yearning to enter the building.”
Petey’s vibrant personality spellbound the SPCA staff, particularly considering the numerous times he had been overlooked at his previous shelter. Ranlet expressed her surprise, saying, “From day one, he exuded super friendliness and playfulness. We were astonished that nobody wanted him.” Eventually, Petey found a new home where he could snuggle with his family and bond with his new furry sibling. The SPCA also shared an adorable photo of Petey curled up on a blanket, wearing a contented smile. Ranlet mentioned, “Unfortunately, we anticipated that he might be overlooked, just like before, due to his smaller size. But someone fell in love with him within a few weeks.”
Ranlet explained that Petey’s forever family instantly recognized their special connection through a photo of the endearing pup. After a month of staying with the SPCA, Petey’s new family arrived, officially bringing an end to his lengthy shelter stay. Adjusting to his new home was a breeze for Petey, as he wholeheartedly embraced his new life, playing fetch in the backyard and showering his loved ones with endless hugs and kisses.
Every night, Petey, the once-overlooked shelter dog, cozily curls up on his warm bed, falling asleep with a contagious smile on his face. Unfortunately, Petey’s story is not unique, as there are between 8 and 10 other dogs waiting for their forever homes at SCPA of Wake County for nearly a year. However, inspired by Petey’s happy ending, Ranlet and the SPCA staff remain hopeful that these long-term residents will also find their happily-ever-after. Ranlet concluded, “We’re rooting for them to find their people because they truly deserve it.”
