A married couple, Roland Adam, a 54-year-old property developer, and Edit Adam, a 44-year-old bank employee, took care of a pair of breeding Vietnamese pigs in Hoerstel, Germany, in 2009. They had a litter of five piglets in a woodland owned by Roland. However, one little pot-bellied pig named Paulinchen, who was just two weeks old at that time, found herself alone and freezing. Fearing that foxes might harm her during the night, Roland carried her home and offered her shelter.

Roland believed that his eight-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback named Katjinga, who recently finished nursing her own litter, could take care of the piglet. Surprisingly, his assumption turned out to be correct. Katjinga instantly fell in love with Paulinchen and treated her like part of the family.

The two animals shared a vast 20-acre farm that belonged to Roland. Whenever Paulinchen felt hungry, her adoptive canine mother would clean her and offer her milk. Once she finished her meal and had a restful night’s sleep, Paulinchen would snuggle up to her dog mother. The bond between the giant farm dog and the little piglet was undeniable, as if they were a mother-dog duo.

The heartwarming story of the fortunate piglet quickly went viral. Internet users couldn’t resist the remarkable display of maternal love and compassion from the canine. While most people found the tale uplifting, some expressed concern about the piglet growing up believing she was a dog. Additionally, Ridgebacks are known to have the potential for aggression, so it was important to keep a close eye on the little piglet.
