Have you ever thought about what you would do if you stumbled upon someone who looked exactly like you? Would you approach them and say hello? Well, that’s exactly what Bethany Coleman did when she took her dog, Rogue, for a walk and came across a dog that looked identical to her furry friend. It was like seeing a mirror image of Rogue on a leash! Naturally, Bethany and Rogue couldn’t resist introducing themselves.
Bethany Coleman had no plans to bring another dog into her already bustling household. She and her boyfriend Tyson were already taking care of Rogue, a rescue dog, and two senior cats. The idea of adding another pet seemed overwhelming. Bethany explained, “Tyson mentioned getting another dog, but I was adamant about saying no. We were living in an apartment in Beacon Hill and we already had two cats and one dog. I kept thinking no landlord in their right mind would rent to two humans, two cats, and two dogs!”
ntervened in October 2016, when Coleman took Rogue for a stroll to the local farmers’ market. Little did they know, it wasn’t the fresh produce that would catch their attention that day, but rather another dog who seemed to be Rogue’s doppelgรคnger. Bethany excitedly recalls, “Beast was a complete surprise! Another shelter had brought some dogs for adoption, and one of them happened to resemble Rogue. I immediately called Tyson and said, ‘I found a dog I want to rescue!'”
Back then, Bethany wasn’t actively seeking another pet, but the connection was undeniable. She couldn’t resist falling in love with Beast, who was Rogue’s twin in appearance and size. Both dogs were cairn terrier mixes, and they hit it off right away. Bethany wasted no time and immediately started filling out the adoption paperwork. She even has the very first picture of Beast taken at the market. It was a clear sign that the 8-month-old puppy belonged with them. As for Rogue, she seemed convinced that they were long-lost twins. Bethany explained, “Rogue and I had love at first sight with him. He looked just like Rogue, same size (back then), same coat… People always ask us if they’re siblings.”
However, once Beast became an official member of the family, Rogue started to miss having the spotlight to herself. Bethany shared, “At first, we would get both Beast and Rogue the same toys, but Rogue would always want whatever Beast had and would snatch it from him.” Despite the occasional sibling rivalry, the two dogs quickly became the best of friends and partners in crime.
Even though Beast has grown to be much bigger than Rogue, he still sees himself as her twin. Bethany laughs, “He thinks he’s as small as Rogue, but he’s not. He can’t understand why he can’t do the things she does. He’s just a big, lovable goober and definitely a mama’s boy. He’ll even step on Tyson and the cats just to get to me if I’m on the couch or bed.”
Beast’s laid-back nature perfectly complements Rogue’s energetic spirit. Bethany adds, “Beast is the gentle giant and my cuddlebug. He competes with the cats for lap space. Rogue used to be super hyper when she was the only dog, but now that she has a boyfriend, she has definitely mellowed out.”
Living in Hawaii has brought this little family even closer, and the move has been smooth sailing. When they first arrived, the dogs had to go through mandatory quarantine, and Bethany worried that they would forget about her. But when they were finally reunited, it was as if no time had passed at all. Bethany reflects, “Our journey across the country proved that this little family will always stick together. We appreciate each day for the unconditional love they give us, and we can’t wait for the next adventure. Sometimes I joke that we’re creating our own little Noah’s Ark with two humans, two cats, and two dogs.”
