Canine Light Shine is a non-profit organization that specializes in rescuing stray and unwanted dogs in Pine Ridge and other Indian Reservations in South Dakota. They recently came across a hairless roaming pup and immediately took her in.
Due to her lack of hair, they couldn’t determine her age or breed. The volunteers estimated that she was around 2 years old when she was brought to the rescue.
The volunteers noticed that her skin was raw and red. They recognized that she was suffering from chronic mange and other skin infections, which are incredibly painful for a dog.
She was also weak from hunger, barely able to move when they tried to feed her. Initially called Tiny Dancer, she was eventually renamed Mikita when she was transferred to another canine rescue.
Mikita was fostered by a volunteer from Happy Tails Rescue. They started treating her mange, and eventually, her fur began to grow back.
Through this process, they discovered that Mikita is a husky. That’s when Mikita met her human, Jessi Sova, who was looking for a new pup to provide companionship to her own rescue dog, Kane.
After reading Mikita’s story on Facebook, Jessi knew she had to meet her. She wasted no time in applying to adopt Mikita and setting up a meeting.
Kane accompanied Jessi when they first met Mikita. Both dog and human instantly fell in love with Mikita’s wonderful disposition, solidifying the adoption.
Once Mikita was officially adopted by Jessi, they discovered that she had discospondylitis.
Discospondylitis is an infection in the vertebrae.
Initially, they believed Mikita would require surgery, but the vets assured them that she would fully recover with a rigorous antibiotic therapy. Jessi raised money to cover Mikita’s bills, and any remaining funds were donated to various charities and causes.
They recently discovered that Mikita was still experiencing some pain when she woke Jessi one evening, crying.
Mikita usually wakes Jessi up at night if she needs anything, but her cries that night were particularly agonizing. Mikita couldn’t move her legs to stand, so they rushed her to the hospital.
After a successful therapy session, Mikita is now in her truest form: a caring, playful, high-energy, fluffy angel!
She is free to snooze and cuddle beside her brother, Kane. They hold each other’s paws to ensure the other is safe and well.
Now that Mikita has fully recovered from her discospondylitis, all of her fur has grown back. Although she can’t bend her back too much, that doesn’t stop her from playing with Kane and having a lot of fun.
It took some time for Mikita to regain her strength and endurance, but once she did, nothing could hold her back. This just goes to show that with enough patience and love, our canine friends can bounce back from any terrible experience they may have had.
