Inspirational Husky Mix Finds Mobility and Joy with 3D-Printed Legs

Introducing Derby! This incredibly adorable mix of a Husky was born with severely deformed front legs and paws, making it incredibly difficult for him to walk like other dogs. Despite his limitations, Derby’s determination pushed him to find a way to move around, even though it often resulted in cuts and injuries.

Derby’s life took a turn when Peace and Paws, a shelter, rescued him. While Derby was at the shelter, a woman named Tara Anderson, who happens to work at 3D Systems, visited to adopt another dog. Notably, 3D Systems is a pioneering company that has played a significant role in revolutionizing 3D printer technology, bringing it into the mainstream. It’s almost as if destiny brought them together.

Tara became captivated by Derby’s story, unable to get him out of her mind. She spent countless hours reading his story and looking at his photos online, often shedding tears. Tara knew deep in her heart that she could make a difference for this dog, and she agreed to foster him. As Tara got to know Derby better, her love for him grew significantly, and she became more determined than ever to help him. While Derby received a set of wheels, they weren’t ideal. They didn’t provide him with the experience he craved, the ability to run and walk freely, and they often got stuck in challenging terrains. The wheels also made it difficult for Derby to interact and play with other dogs. Tara knew that a better solution had to be found to improve Derby’s mobility.

Taking advantage of her role in the world of 3D-printed products, Tara contemplated the possibility of creating a 3D-printed prosthetic leg for Derby. This leg would grant him the mobility he yearned for, allowing him to experience the joy of running and walking, something every dog desires. Little did she know that this decision would be life-changing for Derby. Working with 3D printers made it much easier to create prosthetics tailored specifically to the measurements of Derby’s legs and feet. There was no need for trial and error; instead, they scanned Derby’s legs and made necessary modifications inside a computer, saving precious time and money.

Derby’s prosthetic legs were designed to be closer to the ground, resembling his previous walking experience as much as possible. As he gradually adjusts, the prosthetic legs will be raised higher, eventually reaching a more natural height for a dog of his size. Derby instantly embraced his new legs, even outrunning his newfound parents. Witnessing the incredible results that can be achieved when science, technology, and love converge is truly amazing.

Although Derby is still in the process of mastering the use of his new legs, they will be replaced with larger ones over time. Currently, Derby enjoys running 2 to 3 miles daily with his human companions. As you can see from the video, he seems absolutely ecstatic with his new legs.
