On a gloomy and frigid afternoon, N.Y.P.D officer Michael Pascale’s path crossed with Joey’s. While driving his patrol car through a bustling public park, he came across a petite black dog cowering amidst discarded needles and shattered beer bottles.
The dog, who was tethered to a fence by a heavy chain, immediately caught Pascale’s attention. Joey appeared damp, trembling, and clearly forsaken. Upon closer examination, Pascale noticed the thick chain tightly encircling the dog’s neck, leaving him soaked and shivering in abandonment. Pascale couldn’t ignore the pleading look in Joey’s eyes, silently asking for help. The thought that struck Pascale was crystal clear: “I must rescue him.”
The kind-hearted officer rushed Joey to the Animal Care Centers of N.Y.C shelter in Brooklyn. Drying the appreciative canine with a towel, Pascale felt an undeniable bond forming between them. “It’s no longer merely an animal,” Pascale declared. “I can sense a soul, and I embrace it fully.” He swiftly sent a photo of the abandoned pet to his wife, accompanied by a simple message: “Bring him home.” Her response was immediate and determined, “Adopt him.” A single obstacle stood in their way, but they were ready to overcome it. The next 72 hours seemed surreal, like an eternity.
Pascale was informed by the ACC that Joey was required to remain in their custody for the mandatory 72-hour stray hold. Regardless of how neglected or abandoned an animal may appear, it could have a heartbroken owner desperately searching for their stolen or missing companion. The stray hold offered them a period to locate and report their beloved pet. Upon bidding each other a tearful farewell, Pascale made a solemn promise to return. And true to his word, he showed up the following day and the day after that. With each encounter, their connection grew stronger. Once the stray hold was finally lifted, Pascale joyfully adopted Joey. After completing the necessary paperwork, they took Joey outside to bid Pascale farewell.
Pascale vowed to protect Joey and ensure he would never endure abuse or neglect again, as the exuberant dog lavished him with affectionate kisses. They embarked on their new life together, leaving behind a famished and fearful stray, now transformed into a resilient and adoring companion. Joey relishes showing his dad the wonders of New York City and cherishes moments spent lazily on the couch with his loving mother. Pascale jokingly admits that Joey has become quite the mama’s boy. Although not without flaws, as he occasionally rummages through the trash and despises the rain, Joey’s overall contentment prevails. And there are countless others like him, waiting for their second chance.
